Spring Has Sprung, Here Comes The Pollen

5/1/2023 (Permalink)

We are passing the middle of spring right now which means that it's officially prime time for pollen allergies.  In honor of this righteous timing, let's go over a few ways to rid your home of pollen.  But first, here's some fun facts about pollen that you may not have known.

Fun Facts About Pollen

  • Pollen is the snowflake of spring.  It comes in many different shapes, sizes, and colors.  Though we associate pollen with the color yellow, it can also be a vibrant red, green, purple, white, or brown.
  • Flowering plants aren't the main culprit when it comes to pollen allergies.  Flower pollen is transferred through insects that carry it from flower to flower.  This tends to keep the pollen more contained compared to plants that transfer pollen by releasing it into the air such as ragweed, oak, elms, and maple trees.
  • We tend to think that bumble bees are the only carrier of pollen, However, insects such as butterflies, ants, beetles, and flies are also common pollen carriers.  Mammals, such as lemurs, are also pollen carriers.

Now that we've covered a few fun facts about pollen, lets dig into allergy control.  Pollen spreads like wildfire and while there is no sure way to completely prevent pollen allergies, there are a few ways that you can keep them under control.

How To Reduce Pollen Allergies at Home

  • Dust smart.  As mentioned before, pollen spreads like wildfire.  The most effective way to control pollen through dusting is to use a microfiber towel or duster and dust from top to bottom.
  • Change your air filters.  Changing your air filters regularly, especially when you notice your allergies kicking in, is another effective way to control pollen allergies.  Air filters get packed with dust, hair, and other common allergens that may make your seasonal allergies worse.  Investing in a filter that is made to catch common allergens may also help in this situation.
  • Washing your pillow cases.  Pollen can get caught in your hair and your clothes as soon as you step inside.  If you lay down for a nap as soon as you come home from work, there may be pollen stuck to your bedding and pillow cases.
  • Splurge on the right vacuum cleaner.   Vacuums are expensive, I know, but investing in a good one may be worth it.  A decent vacuum will automatically filter pollen and dust to ensure that it doesn't get spit back into the house.  Professionals recommend a bag-less vacuum with a HEPA filter.

These are a few tips to help you keep your home comfortable even through allergy season.  If you need help cleaning your filters, air vents, drapes, carpets, or anything else that may house allergens, we are more than willing to help!  Our team is IICRC certified and experienced in general cleaning needs.  Give us a call at 817-596-8714

What Does It Mean To Be IICRC Certified?

2/8/2023 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Parker & NE Hood Counties is an IICRC certified firm.
The institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is a nonprofit organization that sets a standard for the restoration industry and provides training and certificates to qualifying cleaning and restoration companies. As an IICRC certified firm, SERVPRO has the privilege of displaying the certified logo.

All IICRC certified firms must:

  • Conduct business with customers with honesty and integrity
  • Require that all job sites must include a technician who has been formally trained and has passed all required tests
  • Require that all technicians participate in a continuing education program in order to keep them up to date with any changes or improvements in the industry
  • Require that all businesses maintain at least a minimum amount of liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident
  • Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to the Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes and accept the conclusions and recommendations of the arbitration.

These standards are the minimum for all cleaning and restoration businesses that have completed the IICRC program. It has been the driving force in establishing the industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water and fire damage restoration, and mold remediation.

Every five years, the standards are reviews and updated. The cleaning and restoration field is constantly evolving with advancements in technology and science and, therefore, the standards must change to keep pace.

Mitigation VS Restoration

7/12/2022 (Permalink)

Before I got involved in this industry I had absolutely no idea what mitigation was.  Over time, I've found that many people are in the same position.  For most people, mitigation isn't in their mental dictionary.  Either that, or that mental dictionary is telling their reader that mitigation and restoration mean the same thing.  Although both are used to recover and restore buildings after fires, water losses, and mold damage, they both have their individual purposes.

Mitigation

In Parker County, TX, a homeowner has come home to a toilet that won't stop running.  With water drowning the floors and baseboards, immediate action must be taken.  In this situation the homeowner is in need of a professional that can remove the water, damaged flooring, and  other materials that might be damaged such as drywall and baseboards; once the damaged materials are removed that professional then needs to dry out any remaining moisture to prevent mold and decay as well as disinfect all affected areas.  This professional needs to perform the mitigation process.

Mitigation is a process utilized for preventative measures.  The goal is to salvage what can be salvaged, and prevent any further, or secondary, damages from occurring.  That is what SERVPRO of Parker and Northeast Hood Counties specializes in; saving your home while also saving your wallet from having to start from scratch.

Restoration

Once SERVPRO has completed the mitigation process and successfully salvaged the home, it is then time for a restoration company to sweep in and make the house feel like home again.  Restoration is repairing, replacing, and salvaging  whatever is left.  This generally includes replacing flooring, baseboards, and lower portions of walls.  Restorers may also try to salvage and restore certain pieces in the home rather than completely replace them. A lot of homeowners even take the mitigation and restoration process as an opportunity to remodel their home, especially when the water loss was a big one and a significant amount of material had to be removed.

Restoration is the act of bringing the space, at minimum, back to normal.  While SERVPRO of Parker and Northeast Hood Counties may not specialize in this process, we often work with a local company that does.

To conclude, mitigation prevents while restoration repairs.  As always, if you have experienced water loss, fire damage, smoke damage, mold damage, or you're just in need of a deep cleaning, SERVPRO of Parker and Northeast Counties is here to help!  We are available 24/7 because after all, disasters don't wait for it to be 9-5, so neither do we.  You can reach us at 817-596-8714.

When Do We Board-Up?

6/7/2022 (Permalink)

When owning a business, there are a few events that might occur unexpectedly, but not uncommonly.  One of these occurrences is vandalism, specifically graffiti.  Graffiti is one of those things that starts out as a joke performed by a few rebellious kids, to a malicious act that the whole town seems to be participating in.  Once the first spray of spray paint has been applied, it's almost like a big target on the wall of your business.  Because of this, when SERVPRO is called in for a vandalism job, we tend to proceed with a board up.  This means boarding up as many doors and windows as possible to prevent further damage from happening.  This will protect the glass entrances as well as products inside of your store.

We will also proceed with a board-up when a storm or fire has occurred and leaves parts of your building exposed to the outside.  It minimized property loss by securing the facility and protecting restorable or reusable materials.  A disaster can leave your business vulnerable to things such as unwanted entry, animal invasion, and further vandalism.

As always, if your business is in need of vandalism, fire, water, or storm cleaning, give us a call!  You can contact us at 817-596-8714
